    Efficient ordinary differential equation-based modelling and skin deformations for character animation.

    In the area of character animation, skin surface modelling, rigging and skin deforamtion are three essential aspects. Due to the different complexity of the characters, the time cost on creating corresponding skin surface model, animation skeleton in order to achieve diverse skin de- formations, fluctuates from several hours to several weeks. More importantly, the data size of skin deformations could sharply influence the efficiency of generating animation. Smaller data size can also speed up character animation and transmission over computer networks. Over years, researchers have developed a variety of skin deformation techniques. Geometric skin deformation approaches have high efficiency but low realism. Example-based skin deformation approaches interpolate a set of given example poses to improve realism and effects that cannot be easily produced by geometric approaches. Physics-based skin deformation methods can greatly improve the realism of character animation, but require non-trivial training, intensive manual intervention, and heavy numerical calculations. Due to these limitations, many recent activities have initiated the research of integrating geometric, example-based, and physics-based skin deformation approaches. The current research is to develop techniques based on Ordinary Differentical Equations (ODE) to efficiently create C2 continuous skin surfaces through two boundary curves, automatically generate skeleton to make the rigging process fast enough for highly efficient computer animation applications, and achieve physically realistic skin deformations for character animation by integrating geometric, physical and data-driven methods. Meanwhile, it is the first attempt to obtain an analytical solution to realistic physics-based skin deformations for highly efficient computation, to avoid the solving of a large set of linear equations, which largely reduces data size and computing time. The basic idea is to build ODE mechanics model, involve isoparametric curves and Fourier Series representation, develop accurate and efficient solutions to calculate physical skin deformations through interpolating input realistic reconstructed 3D models. The proposed techniques will greatly avoid tedious manual work, reduce data size, improve skin deformation realism, and raise efficiency of producing character animation

    Automatic generation of dynamic skin deformation for animated characters

Since non-automatic rigging requires heavy human involvements, and various automatic rigging algorithms are less efficient in terms of computational efficiency, especially for current curve-based skin deformation methods, identifying the iso-parametric curves and creating the animation skeleton requires tedious and time-consuming manual work. Although several automatic rigging methods have been developed, but they do not aim at curve-based models. To tackle this issue, this paper proposes a new rigging algorithm for automatic generation of dynamic skin deformation to quickly identify iso-parametric curves and create an animation skeleton in a few milliseconds, which can be seamlessly used in curve-based skin deformation methods to make the rigging process fast enough for highly efficient computer animation applications

    Advanced ODE Based Head Modelling for Chinese Marionette Art Preservation

    Puppetry has been a popular art form for many centuries in different cultures, which becomes a valuable and fascinating heritage assert. Traditional Chinese marionette art with over 2,000 years history is one of the most representative forms offering a mixture of stage performance of singing, dancing, music, poem, opera, story narrative and action. Apart from a set of string rules which controls the dynamics, head carving skill is another important pillar in this art form. This paper addresses the heritage preservation of the marionette head carving by digitalizing the head models with a novel modelling technique using ordinary differential equations (ODEs). The technique has been specially tailored to suit the modelling complexity and the need of accurate description of shapes. It offers smoothly sewing ODE swept patches to represent the distinct features of a marionette head with sharp variance of local geometry. Such features otherwise are difficult to model and capture accurately, which may require a great effort and tedious hand-crafting of an experienced modeller, when using other representation forms like polygons

    Fully Automatic Facial Deformation Transfer

    Facial Animation is a serious and ongoing challenge for the Computer Graphic industry. Because diverse and complex emotions need to be expressed by different facial deformation and animation, copying facial deformations from existing character to another is widely needed in both industry and academia, to reduce time-consuming and repetitive manual work of modeling to create the 3D shape sequences for every new character. But transfer of realistic facial animations between two 3D models is limited and inconvenient for general use. Modern deformation transfer methods require correspondences mapping, in most cases, which are tedious to get. In this paper, we present a fast and automatic approach to transfer the deformations of the facial mesh models by obtaining the 3D point-wise correspondences in the automatic manner. The key idea is that we could estimate the correspondences with different facial meshes using the robust facial landmark detection method by projecting the 3D model to the 2D image. Experiments show that without any manual labelling efforts, our method detects reliable correspondences faster and simpler compared with the state-of-the-art automatic deformation transfer method on the facial models

    Efficient and Realistic Character Animation through Analytical Physics-based Skin Deformation

    Physics-based skin deformation methods can greatly improve the realism of character animation, but require non-trivial training, intensive manual intervention, and heavy numerical calculations. Due to these limitations, it is generally time-consuming to implement them, and difficult to achieve a high runtime efficiency. In order to tackle the above limitations caused by numerical calculations of physics-based skin deformation, we propose a simple and efficient analytical approach for physicsbased skin deformations. Specifically, we (1) employ Fourier series to convert 3D mesh models into continuous parametric representations through a conversion algorithm, which largely reduces data size and computing time but still keeps high realism, (2) introduce a partial differential equation (PDE)-based skin deformation model and successfully obtain the first analytical solution to physics-based skin deformations which overcomes the limitations of numerical calculations. Our approach is easy to use, highly efficient, and capable to create physically realistic skin deformations

    State-of-the-Art in 3D Face Reconstruction from a Single RGB Image

    Since diverse and complex emotions need to be expressed by different facial deformation and appearances, facial animation has become a serious and on-going challenge for computer animation industry. Face reconstruction techniques based on 3D morphable face model and deep learning provide one effective solution to reuse existing databases and create believable animation of new characters from images or videos in seconds, which greatly reduce heavy manual operations and a lot of time. In this paper, we review the databases and state-of-the-art methods of 3D face reconstruction from a single RGB image. First, we classify 3D reconstruction methods into three categories and review each of them. These three categories are: Shape-from-Shading (SFS), 3D Morphable Face Model (3DMM), and Deep Learning (DL) based 3D face reconstruction. Next, we introduce existing 2D and 3D facial databases. After that, we review 10 methods of deep learning-based 3D face reconstruction and evaluate four representative ones among them. Finally, we draw conclusions of this paper and discuss future research directions

    Efficient C2 Continuous Surface Creation Technique Based on Ordinary Differential Equation

    In order to reduce the data size and simplify the process of creating characters’ 3D models, a new and interactive ordinary differential equation (ODE)-based C2 continuous surface creation algorithm is introduced in this paper. With this approach, the creation of a three-dimensional surface is transformed into generating two boundary curves plus four control curves and solving a vector-valued sixth order ordinary differential equation subjected to boundary constraints consisting of boundary curves, and first and second partial derivatives at the boundary curves. Unlike the existing patch modeling approaches which require tedious and time-consuming manual operations to stitch two separate patches together to achieve continuity between two stitched patches, the proposed technique maintains the C2 continuity between adjacent surface patches naturally, which avoids manual stitching operations. Besides, compared with polygon surface modeling, our ODE C2 surface creation method can significantly reduce and compress the data size, deform the surface easily by simply changing the first and second partial derivatives, and shape control parameters instead of manipulating loads of polygon points

    A survey of parametric modelling methods for designing the head of a high-speed train

    With the continuous increase of the running speed, the head shape of the high-speed train (HST) turns out to be a critical factor for further speed boost. In order to cut down the time used in the HST head design and improve the modelling efficiency, various parametric modelling methods have been widely applied in the optimization design of the HST head to obtain an optimal head shape so that the aerodynamic effect acting on the head of HSTs can be reduced and more energy can be saved. This paper reviews these parametric modelling methods and classifies them into four categories: 2D, 3D, CATIA-based, and mesh deformation-based parametric modelling methods. Each of the methods is introduced, and the advantages and disadvantages of these methods are identified. The simulation results are presented to demonstrate that the aerodynamic performance of the optimal models constructed by these parametric modelling methods has been improved when compared with numerical calculation results of the original models or the prototype models of running trains. Since different parametric modelling methods used different original models and optimization methods, few publications could be found which compare the simulation results of the aerodynamic performance among different parametric modelling methods. In spite of this, these parametric modelling methods indicate more local shape details will lead to more accurate simulation results, and fewer design variables will result in higher computational efficiency. Therefore, the ability of describing more local shape details with fewer design variables could serve as a main specification to assess the performance of various parametric modelling methods. The future research directions may concentrate on how to improve such ability
